“Empowering Youth to Be Better Every Day, In Every Way.”

OUR MISSION
The Derek Fisher Be Better Foundation empowers youth through literacy, health, fitness, and athletic programs designed to build strong minds, healthy bodies, and confident leaders, creating pathways to success both in sports and in life.

Derek Fisher is a five-time NBA Champion, respected coach, and passionate advocate for youth development through sports. Known for his leadership, poise under pressure, and dedication to excellence, Fisher’s influence extends far beyond the basketball court. A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Fisher enjoyed an illustrious 18-year NBA career, most notably with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played an integral role in securing five NBA Championships (2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, and 2010). Renowned for his discipline and clutch performances, Fisher’s leadership and professionalism made him one of the most respected figures in professional basketball. Following his retirement as a player, Fisher transitioned into coaching and front-office leadership. He served as the Head Coach of the New York Knicks before joining the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA as Head Coach, where he helped mentor and develop some of the league’s most talented athletes. Off the court, Fisher is the founder of The Derek Fisher Be Better Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth through education, mentorship, health, and sports programming. Rooted in Fisher’s belief that sports teach life lessons in discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, the foundation provides young people, especially in under-resourced communities with access to opportunities that foster both personal and athletic growth. In 2025, Fisher’s commitment to youth sports equity expanded to the policy level when he was appointed to serve on the committee supporting California Assembly Bill 749 (Youth Sports for All Act). This landmark initiative, championed by Assemblymember Tina McKinnor, ensures that every child in California regardless of socioeconomic background has access to affordable and inclusive sports opportunities. Fisher joined a coalition of athletes, educators, and civic leaders working to dismantle barriers to participation and address the growing “pay-to-play” challenges in youth sports. “Structured sport has become more of a pay-to-play environment, and it lacks equity and balance. Every child deserves a chance to play.” – Derek Fisher Fisher’s lifelong work across professional sports, coaching, and community advocacy reflects his unwavering belief that leadership, integrity, and service are essential both on and off the court. Today, he continues to inspire as a mentor, speaker, and champion for youth empowerment creating pathways for the next generation to “be better” in every area of life. Beyond basketball, Fisher has been featured in ESPN, GQ, The Undefeated, and The Players’ Tribune, and remains a visible figure in the Los Angeles community through charitable events, leadership summits, and mentorship programs. Whether breaking down game-winning plays or sharing personal reflections on resilience, Fisher brings decades of high-performance experience and heart to every room he enters.
